As can be seen, I wrote most of this on the way home…
My journey to South Asia has not ended. At this moment it is being digested, thought about, recalled and retold.
In the time away, I have seen, tasted and felt lots of different—sounds; vistas; mind-sets thus ways of life; food; smells and textures. At the same time, I also communed with my self more directly and honestly than I have in a long time…although there was much to experience on the outside, I found being “on the road” much less distracting. It was/is a rich experience that has re ignited a certain kind of hope within me, that I have not experienced for quite a while. Although the physical part of the trip has ended, I am still tripping.
April 14th
Sitting in the Bangkok airport waiting. I have at least another 20 hours before I am home (agh)…it’s going to be a long haul.
Already I am missing Barb. We’ve become so intertwined with our beingness. At this point, in an airport, she would be sitting by the gate while I’d be running around looking for nothing in particular, just to keep myself bus…anything but sitting down. Well here I am, sitting and waiting… strange… spending close to four months with someone practically twenty-four seven…and poof times up and we go our separate way.
But I am not going to go into reflection quite yet…I want to talk about Koh Lanta first and then a wee bit about Bangkok.
Once we left Chiang Mai we landed in Koh Lanta, a small island in the Andaman Sea…its also called Lucky Lanta because it was spared most of the Tsunami devastation that many of the other islands in the area suffered.
Now, how do you describe the perfect place to end a great trip without going on and on…the words that come to mind are: lush, verdant, clear aqua water, warm beautiful sun, spectacular sunsets, amazing food, scuba diving, great view from our room, laughter and oh…wine in a big Jacuzzi over looking the sea.
It was all that and more.
The pictures will show some lovely sights and sunsets…as I have commented on Facebook I have never been anywhere where the sunsets were so beauteous on a regular basis. It was truly unbelievable.
When we came to Koh Lanta we were thinking that we might just stay for five days and then, since we are so close, do a quick trip into Cambodia to see Ankor Wat…an amazing city that was discovered about 100 years ago. Ha, there was no way any one would have been able to tear either Barb or me from Lanta…Cambodia or anywhere else was just not going to happen this time. Besides, we thought, why go anywhere else when we were so much in enjoyment?
But aside from being in a lovely spot overlooking the ocean and going to sleep with the sound of the waves I went scuba diving, after a 15 years hiatus. It was absolutely great to get into the water again and go down…talk about being re inspired to go diving again.
Honestly I am beginning to think I may become a travelling junkie. (Oh dear!)
Bangkok…was two days after a long journey. And I must admit that it was hard to really go out and be as carefree as we’ve been, knowing that our part of the adventure has come to an end…it was time for me to go home and for Barb to continue to New Zealand. As for Bangkok, I guess we’ll just have to come back.
However, we still managed to shop, eat and laugh. We did not do any praying!
Below are pictures of Koh Lanta, forgive me for indulging in so many sunset but I just could not decide which to omit…and I still had to omit quite a few. The Bangkok pictures are mostly in the China town area, that’s where we were staying. I took some of the hotel where we stayed—I found it rather cool.
And by the time I post them, I’ll be in Toronto.
